Support with fundraising

Need a hand with your event? Look no further!

We’re thrilled you want to fundraise for Turning Tides! Whether it’s a big event or a small collection, every effort helps us support people experiencing homelessness across West Sussex. Below you’ll find guidance to make your fundraising safe, legal and successful.

Safe and Legal Fundraising

Fundraising is regulated by law so it’s important to follow a few simple rules:

Collecting money

  • Public collections need local council permission
  • Private venues (eg, community centres or supermarkets) require the owner’s approval
  • Use secure collection tins/buckets and store donations safely. We can provide these on request

Health and safety

  • Some public events need Public Liability Insurance – check with your venue as Turning Tides can’t accept liability for independent fundraising events

  • Carry out a quick risk assessment. The Health & Safety Executive has useful guidance

Alcohol

  • No alcohol for under 18s

  • Check GOV.UK to see if you need a licence for your event

First Aid

  • St John Ambulance has advice on what level of cover your event might need

Raffles and Lotteries

Food safety

Use our name properly

  • Please say you’re fundraising “in aid of Turning Tides”, not “on behalf of”. Our registered charity number is 1027832

Tips for a successful event

Planning is key – here are our top tips:

  • Have a Plan B: If it’s outdoors, think about a backup venue

  • Gather your team: Extra helpers are better than not enough

  • Play “What if…?” Think through possible hiccups so you’re ready

  • Make a checklist: From tables to teaspoons, write it all down

  • Keep contacts handy: Have phone numbers in case plans change
  • Promote, promote, promote: Use social media, posters and word of mouth

  • Add a competition: People love a prize, even a small one

  • Sponsorship tip: Remind people to pay up (on average a quarter of donations come in after the event)

Request Materials and Support

We’re here to help your fundraising feel as special and professional as possible.

  • Branded items: Collection tins, t-shirts, balloons, posters, badges and more are available. We can arrange collection at Worthing Town Hall if you let us know in advance

  • Logos and promotional materials: We can supply our logo and other resources to help you promote your event
