Claire’s Story

I have been supported by Turning Tides since 2022.

I was introduced to Jenny, the Housing First worker in January 2023.

Being in temporary accommodation was awful. Not knowing what was going on in terms of my accommodation was scary.

I went into rehab in 2023 and completed a 12-week rehab programme.

I was offered a flat whilst in rehab and had one available when I finished rehab.

My flat has given me somewhere to call my own; a safe space; my own front door.  I am away from drinkers, and I can work on my mental health.

Jenny has helped me set up my bills and other admin type things.  She has attended various appointments with me. Without this support I would not have been able to do these things.

Housing First has changed my life and without their help and support I know I would have been dead by now.

Turning Tides has helped me get my life back.

We’ve used the name Claire for this client as they wish to stay anonymous. Many of our clients wish to share their stories with us but due to privacy and safety concerns wish to retain anonymity. This something that Turning Tides is proud to support.

What is Housing First?

Housing First gives people experiencing homelessness a stable home as the starting point for rebuilding their lives. With no conditions beyond a tenancy commitment, support is flexible, long-term, and shaped by each individual’s needs. Recognised nationally for its impact, our programme works with housing associations, councils, and private landlords to provide safe, self-contained homes across West Sussex. By removing instability and building trust, Housing First helps people find their own moment to take the next step toward recovery and independence.
