Adele’s Story
I began working with my Housing First support worker in January 2022.
Up to this point I had almost given up on life. I believed it would be easier for me to be homeless and living on the streets.
Getting to know my support worker felt I was finally being seen, heard, listened to and no longer invisible. I was not being judged. My worker was approachable and always available on the end of the phone and in person. The support was invaluable. I was constantly reassured by my worker and was updated whenever there was something for me to know. She was helping me along the way. Having the same worker was reassuring and comforting. Whether it was helping me with my benefits, filling in forms or getting me to medical appointments, the support was solid.
My worker was honest and transparent. She was upfront with information and did not tell me what I wanted to hear; more what the current situation was, and what the future was looking like. I liked this approach.
When I got my flat, I was helped by Housing First to obtain white goods and furniture, as well as any other items needed to set me up in my home.
I have been living in my “forever home” since last year. I am near my family, close to good transport links so I can attend my various hospital appointments.
Having a tenancy has been a massive relief. I feel secure and stable in my life. I can live having control over my life. I can make a drink, shower, cook and watch TV whenever I want, without limitations or having to consider other people.
I have also had a pet, and I am the proud owner of two beautiful cats now.
What is Housing First?
Housing First gives people experiencing homelessness a stable home as the starting point for rebuilding their lives. With no conditions beyond a tenancy commitment, support is flexible, long-term, and shaped by each individual’s needs. Recognised nationally for its impact, our programme works with housing associations, councils, and private landlords to provide safe, self-contained homes across West Sussex. By removing instability and building trust, Housing First helps people find their own moment to take the next step toward recovery and independence. Read more about this trailblazing service here.
