Volunteer – Matthew

What volunteering role do you do and what does it involve?

My role at Turning Tides is Client Engagement during the Breakfast Club at St Clare’s Community Hub in Worthing. I’m also a Befriender.

What inspired you to volunteer with us?

I was inspired to volunteer after helping out on the night shelter 2 years ago with my church. Once the shelter finished in March, I felt I was really missing something and wanted to be more of service to the local homeless community.

What have you gained from volunteering with us?

I have gained so much from my time at Turning Tides, above all else it’s given me an appreciation to the daily struggle faced by the people that use the facilities at St Clare’s Community Hub. Also, it’s broken down the barriers I had in approaching those in need. I felt almost unable to offer anything of worth to the person on the street but in reality a simple conversation goes a long way.

What would you say to someone thinking about volunteering with us?

I would say to anyone that was thinking about volunteering to just go for it. The team at Turning Tides are so friendly and helpful. I never felt that I was on my own or that I had been thrown in at the deep end. I’ve met some amazing people while I have been here.
