Volunteer – Ed

What volunteering role do you do and what does it involve?

I’m a gym coach at an accommodation project in Worthing. I gauge people’s perception at the time of my visit, what their interests are, what motivates them. I can then plan with each person anything that gets them moving, from a personalised gym workout to group activities and outdoor walks.

What inspired you to volunteer with us?

I was first introduced to Turning Tides by a couple of previous work colleagues who now work for the charity. I am a qualified gym instructor and that is what they wanted! I really enjoy the time with the residents – listening to their life stories and what they want to achieve in life.

What have you gained from volunteering with us?

I’ve put a lot into this role and gained so much more from it. I’ve learnt how people get through challenging circumstances and come out the other side stronger. The experience has helped me grow as a person.

What would you say to someone thinking about volunteering with us?

Look at it as a positive challenge. Take each moment as it is and build the role drawing on your strengths to head in the direction that is needed.
