How long have you worked for the organisation?
I joined Turning Tides in August last year. When someone asked me in a meeting yesterday how long I’d worked here I had to stop and check…….how can it only be 10 months?
What is your current role and briefly what does your job entail?
I work in the Development and Quality Team as a Business Development Manager. I am responsible for turning other people’s brilliant ideas (I don’t have many of my own!) into fundable bids to Trusts & Foundations. This is both to sustain existing activity at Turning Tides and to develop new services as we look at innovative ways to work with our clients. I am also responsible for making sure that once we win funding we comply to the terms & conditions of the grant and monitor project activity in a timely and accurate fashion – I’m not terribly good at being strict though!
What made you apply for a job with us?
I had been working in the Higher Education sector as a Research Development Manager for more than 20 years. I was happy but knew that I needed a new challenge. I had also been volunteering at the Brighton Churches Together Winter Night Shelter for a number of years which I found hugely rewarding. When I saw this job advertised at Turning Tides I felt really excited – an opportunity to use my skills and expertise for a cause I was passionate about.
What do you feel are the main benefits of working with us?
The main benefit for me is that I feel I’m doing something that makes a difference! Knowing that I am playing a part in the organisational mission to end local homelessness makes me leap out of bed in the morning – I don’t think there are many people who feel like this about their job!
On a more practical note I really appreciate the flexibility staff are offered here. The focus is on how you can get your job done as well as possible rather than on sitting at a desk from 9-5 each day. This also means that I can get out into our services and talk to clients and front-line workers which improves the quality of my bids no end and ensures that, as an organisation, we are meeting real rather than perceived needs.
What do you love about your job?
What an amazing bunch of people I’ve met at Turning Tides! I’m astonished each day by the commitment, passion and dedication of my colleagues and I feel privileged to work alongside them all. I am also lucky enough to be part of a Team led by a manager who actively encourages input from all her staff, who is enthusiastic about exploring new ideas and who offers her staff autonomy and support in equal measure! She is also very good at saying “Thank You” which means a lot!
What would you say for anyone thinking of applying to work with us?
Well, you certainly won’t be bored! If you are after a job where the days whizz by in the blink of an eye and you feel as though you have made a difference when you go home, this is the one for you!
