Homelessness and poverty are on the increase across the UK. We continue to work with other agencies locally, to try and help as many people as we can. Over 12 months we helped in excess of 1,100 people. For some this will be advice over the telephone, for others they will be within our residential projects for up to 2 years. Everyone is an individual with different needs and we try to cater to those needs.
Every year during Harvest Festival we collect donations of food for our projects. Without continued support of the community, Turning Tides would not be able to carry on helping the homeless and insecurely housed in our community.
This year we received 23,548 items! This includes: 1403 tins of baked beans, 791 jars of coffee, 1491 packets of biscuits and 1747 cans of soup! The food that is donated to us helps to feed the 58 men and women in our services every night, as well as those that attend our breakfast clubs in Littlehampton and Worthing, the Outreach Café, food parcels we give to clients and meals provided at groups we run. However, by supporting us you not only support the homeless men and women in the community, but also the Foodbanks and Women’s Refuge, who we send excess donations to.
However, not only is harvest an important time for collecting donations, but it is also time of awareness raising. We attend schools, churches and community groups, to do talks about the work we do and how to get involved. We are continuously impressed by the empathy and generosity of our supporters. Most notably the young people in schools, with their intelligent questions and desire to understand the lives of our clients.
Every year we are really touched by the harvest donations that pour in and this year is no exception. The clients that help sort donations are always very moved by the generosity of their community and reminded of the support they have.
Many thanks to everyone that donated!
