Turning Tides is reliant on public support for the continuation of its services, in particular our crucial hub services, which provide life-saving support to people who are homeless and having to sleep rough. The number of people homeless in England is predicted to jump by a third. Councils are warning there will be a \u201ctidal wave\u201d of need caused by benefit freezes, soaring food and energy bills and the end of Covid eviction bans.<\/p>\n

We fear that at this critical time, when demand for our services has never been greater, we may not be able to operate the hubs and provide the support people depend on.<\/p>\n

Our hubs and dedicated keyworkers are our \u2018frontline\u2019 \u2013 ensuring we can support all those in our county that need our support. They are the place where people arrive in despair and receive emotional and practical help, the crucial beginning of a pathway out of their desperate situation. These are extraordinary places of practical support, comfort, acceptance and shared resilience. For all these reasons, our services are more important now than ever.<\/p>\n

The hubs transform lives and, without doubt, they save lives.<\/h3>\n

We are asking for help to continue our frontline services, so we don\u2019t let the people who need us down.<\/h3>\n

Turning Tides\u2019 Chief Executive, John Holmstrom is very concerned: \u201cThe future of our frontline services must be secured if we are to continue our life saving work. People come to us, very often, because they have no other place to turn to.\u202f Some are extremely vulnerable and experiencing severe mental ill health, and physical illness, from having to live on the streets. There is no doubt in my mind – if our community hubs are unable to remain open – people\u2019s lives will be at risk.\u201d<\/p>\n

The charity\u2019s frontline services provide essential practical and emotional support to people across West Sussex who have to sleep rough. The hubs in particular are the fundamental start to most people\u2019s journey out of homelessness – representing a much-needed safety net – with access to food, showers, washing machines, medical care, counselling, and vital help with housing and employment. People experiencing homelessness depend on them, as one hub-user explains:<\/p>\n

\u201cSleeping rough \u2026 I have been through hell and back\u2026\u202f if the community hub had not been open there would have been a lot of deaths.\u201d<\/h3>\n

Over the years, thousands of people have depended on support from Turning Tides, something which Claire Halford-Dale, Worthing\u2019s Hub Manager is only too aware:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt takes a lot of courage for anyone to ask for help. A lot of people that come to us are really at their lowest ebb, they often feel physically and emotionally exhausted – the toll of sleeping rough in all weathers. Every single person that comes to us is different, how they became homeless is different and consequently how we support them is different. It is vital everyone is understood as an individual with their own needs and circumstances.<\/p>\n

The one thing they always receive here is a warm and caring smile. To know they don\u2019t have to go through the trauma of homelessness alone \u2013 that we are always here to help. We are sometimes the only constant in their lives. I am in no doubt our services have saved lives, especially during the pandemic where isolation really took hold. These are places where people who have nothing at all can finally get the help they need and we need them more than ever.\u201d<\/p>\n

Did you know that for every person you see rough sleeping, there are at least another 20 \u2018hidden homeless?\u2019 <\/span>And those numbers are on the rise.<\/span><\/h2>\n

You may have seen a great deal in the media recently<\/span> about the Government\u2019s latest shocking figures on the rise of homelessness. A staggering 26% rise in rough sleeping.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m Nick, an Outreach Worker with Turning Tides and I really want to take this opportunity to tell you about my experiences as an outreach worker for Turning Tides. And share some of the frightening picture of escalating homelessness we\u2019re seeing locally.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our services are seeing increases of 29%, 59%, 66%… Many people are hidden away in the countryside \u2013 it’s really alarming.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Your support is even more vital right now, because the truth is that the government statistics don\u2019t give the full picture of what\u2019s happening around us, and the impact of the cost of living crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n

Without your support, many people in our local community may have to face the trauma of homelessness completely alone.<\/span><\/h3>\n

Homelessness is – really \u2013 hidden. There\u2019s been a huge increase in the number of people sofa-surfing, sleeping in their cars and vans, or living hidden away in woods and fields on the edges of towns across your county.<\/span><\/p>\n

As an outreach worker I visit people trying to survive living and sleeping rough \u2013 often in tents, sheds or makeshift shelters. It used to be that the majority of people I found came from backgrounds of multiple deprivation, and I still see a lot of people like this. But increasingly we\u2019re seeing people who were doing ok not so long ago. Some of them have recently lost their jobs, many have been evicted, and some are in work and homeless. Think of that \u2013 working hard and still not having a safe place to call home.<\/span><\/p>\n

Please, please read Guy\u2019s story below. He\u2019s someone who is in work, a conscientious employee, cycling miles every day to wash cars. But he\u2019s homeless – living in an old leaky shed, out of sight, in one of this county\u2019s most picturesque areas.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our community hubs and day centres are seeing the same awful picture \u2013 people turning up exhausted in the morning, having had to try and find a safe place to sleep rough, and asking for a shower and some breakfast so they can go to work.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have a safe home to go to, and I deeply hope you do too. I can\u2019t imagine how hard it must be for people like Guy and the others. It isn\u2019t right.<\/span><\/p>\n

To offer more help finding safe, secure accommodation for those who are trying hard but still can\u2019t afford to live.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve helped hundreds of people onto their pathway out of homelessness over the years, so I know people can find a way out, with help. But I\u2019m genuinely worried<\/span> for the future. You can be there for the rising numbers of people who need us now.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our Community Hubs in Littlehampton and Worthing will continue to provide access to a hot shower, clean clothes, food and other essentials. Outreach workers will continue to scour the streets and countryside, working hard to support homeless people across the county to provide them with everything they need. In Worthing, we will have a food truck serving delicious food to those sleeping rough and our frontline workers will be on hand to support clients accessing the help they need. <\/p>\n

Throughout the county we will be offering a Festive Friend to anyone experiencing homelessness. Christmas is often such a difficult time for many of our clients and having someone to to talk to can bring such warmth and strength. We will ensure that no one goes through the trauma of homelessness alone.\u00a0<\/p>\n

People who are living in Turning Tides’ accommodation will receive a food hamper with everything they need for a Christmas feast – as well as treats. All the donations provided by our generous community will go straight into the projects to ensure each and every client knows how much their community cares about them. Volunteers will be visiting our projects decorating homes and bringing the warmth of the festive season as they cook amazing feasts with all the trimmings.<\/p>\n

Crucially, our frontline staff will be on hand with emotional and practical support – treating everyone with dignity and respect. Whatever a person\u2019s circumstances, we are determined to show them they are cared about. \u00a0\u2018Festive friends\u2019 \u2013 volunteer befrienders will also be checking in on all our clients regularly across the region throughout December and especially on Christmas Day to show them that they are not alone.<\/p>\n

Cards written from members of the community with supportive messages will be delivered to our clients, ensuring that your heartfelt message for a brighter year ahead are shared.<\/p>\n

Charity fundraising is regulated by law. Below are some guidelines to ensure your <\/span>fundraising is both safe and legal. Full guidelines are available from the Institute of Fundraising<\/a>\u00a0 or you can contact our Fundraising Team for further support and advice.<\/span><\/p>\n

Collecting money<\/h3>\n

Collecting money in a public place requires permission <\/span>from the local council. If you are fundraising on private property, such as a community centre or supermarket, ensure you have the owner’s permission. Check that you have a secure container to keep money in and somewhere safe to store it during and after the event. You can obtain<\/span> collections tins, buckets and security labels are available at request. Sealed collection tins and buckets are to be opened only by a designated person in the presence of a witness.<\/span><\/p>\n

Health and safety<\/h3>\n

If you are organising an event that involves members of the public you will need to have Public Liability Insurance. Check whether the venue has this level of insurance and the cover extends to your event. Unfortunately, if it is not an event run by Turning Tides we cannot accept liability for a fundraising activity or event someone undertakes in support of our charity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

First Aid<\/h3>\n

You can find guidance on the level of First Aid required at an event from <\/span>St John Ambulance<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Alcohol licences<\/h3>\n

You must ensure measures are put in place so that under 18\u2019s are not served. For guidance on when you require an alcoholic license you can find more from GOV.UK<\/a><\/p>\n

Raffles<\/h3>\n

You can find guidance on organising a raffle or lottery from the Gambling Commission<\/a><\/p>\n

Food<\/h3>\n

We have bags, balloons, collection tins, t-shirts, leaflets and more. These things do cost us to produce and post however so this will be considered when giving out merchandise.<\/p>\n

The charity runs 21 properties in various locations across the county supporting hundreds of insecurely housed men and women.
